Evaluation Details

To complete the Final Project, you will need the DWG file provided and access to AutoCAD.

Scenario

Your client is the president of the Altrea Advertising Agency. She has hired you to design the company’s new office space, which is located on the 5th floor of a newly built office tower. You must create several different types of drawings as well as prepare a presentation.

Information:

EXISTING PLAN – The existing plan can be found in the supplied DWG file.

ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES
• The windows are all 10’ tall and placed 2’ 6’’ up from the concrete floor.
• The distance between the ceiling slab and the floor slab is 15’.
• The ducts for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and electricity are visible and are located 24’’ below the ceiling. You must respect this measurement when designing the ceiling.
• The interior walls will be made of drywall on metal studs and be 5’’ thick.
• The steel columns cannot be moved.

CONCEPT, AMBIENCE AND SPECIAL REQUESTS
The president would like the space to be contemporary and dynamic, with a layout that encourages communication. When a new client enters the office, they should perceive a company that is both serious and creative. The president would also like you to propose ways to reduce the electricity costs.

SPACES TO PLAN BASED ON THE CLIENT’S NEEDS
• Space 501 – Reception area
The reception desk with integrated storage space will be brought over from the old office. It is 72’’ wide, 40’’ tall and 28’’ deep. The receptionist requires an ergonomic office chair. You must also create a waiting area with four comfortable armchairs, a corner or centre coffee table and a 36” wide for visitors.

• Space 502 – Conference room
The conference room requires a conference table that can fit ten people, ten swivel chairs and a storage space that is the full height of the room (from floor to ceiling). A sink and mini-fridge needs to be integrated into the storage space.

• Space 503 – President’s office
The president’s office requires a large desk (minimum 72’’ wide), a sideboard with drawers or doors across the entire front, an ergonomic office chair for the president, two chairs for visitors, a meeting table with four chairs, two loveseats and a corner or centre coffee table

• Space 504 – Artistic director’s office
The artistic director’s office requires a large desk (minimum 72’’ wide) and a side desk. It also requires a bookcase with 15 linear feet of storage, an ergonomic office chair and two chairs for visitors.

• Space 505 – Editorial office
The editorial office requires ten corner desks, each with two side desks, an ergonomic office chair, and enough space for a computer and a 21’’ screen. The space must also have six 36’’ four-drawer filing cabinets and a meeting table with six chairs.

• Space 506 – Secretary’s office
The secretary who supports the president and artistic director requires a desk, a side desk and a storage cabinet (in a U-shaped configuration). There must also be an ergonomic office chair.

• Space 507 – Administrative assistants’ office
The administrative assistants’ office requires two desks, each with a side desk, an ergonomic office chair and a 36’’ four-drawer filing cabinet.
• Space 508 – Kitchen
The kitchen requires a countertop of approximately 72’’ wide with a sink and built-in dishwasher, wall cabinets, a microwave suspended under the cabinets, a full-size refrigerator (18 cubic feet or more), a dining table and six chairs.

• Space 509 – Washroom
This washroom must be adapted to wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. It requires three toilets and three sinks as well as a countertop, mirrors and accessories. The washroom is unisex therefor all the toilets should be in individual stalls and one of the stalls must be wheelchair accessible.

• Space 510 – Employee lounge
This space is used for the employees to relax. It needs a 72” sofa, two armchairs and some coffee tables. It also needs to have a closet for the coats of about twenty people.

• Space 511 – Copy room
Finally, the copy room requires a photocopier and a storage cabinet for paper as well as a table of 30” x 60” for the assemblage of documents.

Instructions

To complete the task, you must create the following nine drawings:

1. The blocking plan – Scale: 1/8’’ = 1’-0”
• The blocking plan must respect the criteria matrix and bubble diagram. The square footage may vary, but the proportions between the areas must be respected. The room layout must be simple and have enough space to fit the furniture and equipment.
• Write the name of the spaces and the square footage of each. Be sure to indicate the access points with an arrow.
• Identify the public, private and service areas and colour code each area (blue, yellow and red). Create a legend for the title block with these same colors. The colors for the area types and those in the legend should be the only colored elements on the plan once printed.

2. The furniture layout plan – Scale: 1/8’’ = 1’-0”
• First, locate and place the outer wall (7 ¼” thick) along the tenant line in front of the elevators and add the entrance door (which must be at least 36’’ wide). Pay close attention to which way the doors open.
• Next, draw all the interior walls (5’’ thick) and all the doors, ensuring their dimensions are suitable for wheelchair users. Again, pay close attention to which way the doors open.
• Draw all the furniture using plausible dimensions and add some notes to identify the furniture which is less evident.
• Indicate the name, number and square footage of the spaces. Example: (Local 508, Kitchen, 150sf)
• Add all other annotations as per technical standards.

3. The construction plan – Scale: 1/8’’ = 1’-0”
• Add dimensions for the walls and plumbing to the construction plan.
• Identify the reference symbols for the elevations drawings that you will create later on. These elevations should be be of walls that greatly show your concept.
• Name and number as well as give general dimensions of each space. Example: Local 508, Kitchen, 10’ x 15’)
• Add any and all other annotations as per technical standards.

4. The reflected ceiling plan (construction, electrical and lighting) – Scale: 1/8’’ = 1’-0”
• Draw the ceiling concept including the types of ceilings and their heights.
• Create and integrate the lighting concept. Keep in mind the needs for a more cost effective electrical concept. The lighting concept must be complete and adequate for the spaces.
• Add the electrical needs. (outlets, switches, and circuits)
• Create a title block legend showing identification for the symbols used on the plan.
(Example: switch, outlet, ceiling luminaire, sconce etc) • Name and number each space. Example: Local 508, Kitchen)
• Add any and all other annotations as per technical standards.

5. The lighting specification legend – scale drafter’s choice
• Research luminaires online or in showrooms from specialised distributors and create a complete lighting legend including all specifications as per technical and specification standards. (Symbol, distributor, manufacturer, model, image, luminaire type, lamp type, lamp properties: intensity, kelvin etc.)

6. Three elevations – Scale 1/2″ = 1’-0”
• Choose three views to evolve into elevations. One of these views must be of the reception area but the other two should be chosen as to where you concept has a focal point. Example, a view of the copy room should not have an impact on the concept.
• Add a person to scale into one of the elevations.
• Add notes on the general finishes. (Example: dark walnut plank flooring, red acrylic countertop)
• Add dimensions for the principal elements.
• Add any and all other annotations as per technical standards.

7. A perspective of the conference room
• Draw a two-point perspective of your conference room including all the elements found on the plans. The architecture of the space and the general shapes should all be drawn by hand.
• Render this perspective in Photoshop or by hand. There should be shadows, textures and colors to represent the materials you are suggesting.
• Save your perspective as a .jpeg as you will need to integrate it into your set of drawings in AutoCAD. It will serve as the title page image.

8. Preparations of the presentation of the set of drawings
• In AutoCAD, create all pages following technical standards such as completed title blocks, plot styles etc.
• Create your title page and insert your perspective
• Create an index for your pages. (this can be a separate page or on the title page)
• Revise and apply all technical and presentation standards found in the Standards Design document.
• Print all the pages as PDF files and merge them together to create one multipage document.
