Guideline for Final Submission

  • The assessment for this module is in 2 parts: ASSIGNMENT PART 1 and ASSIGNMENT PART 2.
  • You should aim to complete ASSIGNMENT PART 1 before WEEK 6 and make sure you get FORMATIVE FEEDBACK from your lecturer during teaching weeks 5 and 6.
  • It is also recommended that you complete ASSIGNMENT PART 2 before WEEK 9 and

get FORMATIVE FEEDBACK from your lecturer for your Assignment 2 during teaching weeks 8 and 9.

  • Once you complete BOTH PARTS, you need to compile them into a single Microsoft Word document for Final Submission.
  • Remember, there will be only ONE submission link on Moodle. You cannot submit PART 1 and PART 2 separately.

 

 

Assignment 1

Submission Format

The submission of Assignment 1 is in the form of a 10-minute individual PowerPoint presentation. The presentation slides and speaker notes should be submitted as one document. You are required to make effective use of PowerPoint headings, paragraphs and subsections as appropriate. During the classroom sessions in weeks 9 & 10 you will get a chance to present your work in person and receive formative feedback from your tutor / lecturer, which you can incorporate in your final submission.

Your research should be referenced using the Harvard referencing system. Please also provide a bibliography using the Harvard referencing system. Suggested word count: approximately 1500-2000 words, although you will not be penalised if you exceed it.

Assignment Brief and Guidance

Scenario and activity:

You currently work as an intern for a business consultancy firm that provides advice and market intelligence to small businesses and entrepreneurs, and you have been asked to present at the upcoming annual Business Startup Conference in London, on the topic ‘Entrepreneurial Ventures and Entrepreneurial Mindset’.

For this purpose, you need to prepare a 10-minute individual presentation, in which you should do the following:

  1. Provide definitions of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial activity, and enterprise by using credible literature sources.
  2. llustrate the scope of entrepreneurship, consider examples of different types of entrepreneurial ventures (for example, lifestyle and growth firms, replicative and innovative) and critically. evaluate the differences and similarities in their characteristics.
  3. Using specific real-life examples, critically examine the varieties of entrepreneurs (to include serial entrepreneurs, technology entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs, etc.) and their shared entrepreneurial traits and characteristics.
  4. Explore the concept of the entrepreneurial mindset (or entrepreneurial spirit) and its contribution to entrepreneurial ventures. When explaining the above concept, make sure you examine the range of skills, characteristics and tendencies associated with it.

Here you may want to consider types of skills that typify entrepreneurs and differentiate them from other organisation managers, e.g. positivity, creativity and innovation, persuasion, tenacity and curiosity as the main sources of recognising entrepreneurial opportunities and generating business ideas. Also, the skills that can be taught to encourage an entrepreneurial mindset, e.g. valuing others, acceptance of failure, cultivating a positive attitude.

5. Provide critical evaluation of the similarities and differences in situational factors in a personal context of entrepreneurs, e.g. the influence of family upbringing, diverse cultural background, education and lifestyle, and howthese relate to different lines of argument about development of entrepreneurial mindset.By comparing and contrasting different cases ofreal-life entrepreneurs, consider how and to what extent their backgrounds and experiences has influenced them.

Here you may consider different perspectives relating to whether entrepreneurial traits and tendencies are part of the genetic makeup or learnt; or how diverse backgrounds and experiences can impact personal motivation and in turn foster or hinder entrepreneurship. You can consider the highly entrepreneurial traits of immigrants, for example.

It is recommended that in addition to the opening / title PowerPoint slide (stating the topic and your name / student ID), you include a minimum of 1-2 slides per each of the above tasks. Please make sure there is sound theoretical underpinning throughout your content and provide relevant examples to support your lines of argument in the presentation.

The submission of Assignment 2 is in the form an article, which you need to write in a Word document. You are required to make use of headings, paragraphs, subsections and illustrations as appropriate, and all work must be supported with research and referenced using the Harvard referencing system.

Please also provide a bibliography using the Harvard referencing system. The recommended word count is within the 1500-2000 word range, although you will not be penalised if you exceed it.

Scenario

You are still in your role as an intern at the same consultancy firm, and they are now updating the content of their website. Therefore, they have given you a task to work on an online article on the topic of ‘The Macroeconomic Impact of SMEs and the Importance of Intrapreneurship’, which will be published on their website. To prepare this article, you need to conduct a mini research that will critically examine the nature and scope of entrepreneurship, characteristics and traits of various types of entrepreneurial ventures, as well the entrepreneurial mindset of business owners who establish these ventures. The findings will be presentedin the article, and they should be based on a range of different examples.

Suggested approach and structure for preparing the article:

a) Critically assess the impact and importance of SMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) on the economy at different levels: local, regional and national, including an international context. You must use and interpret relevant data and statistics to support your findings.

b) Furthermore, in the contents of this article you should discuss, explore and evaluate the phenomenon of intrapreneurship within public and corporate organisations, and the benefits it could bring them. For instance, how it can contribute towards building competitive advantage by its practices of innovation, sustainability and adaptability in business.You may also want to consider the impact of disruptive entrepreneurs on business
