Trauma Case Study: Javier – Assignment Instructions

This assignment is designed to help you synthesize trauma theory, neuroscience, assessment tools, and trauma-informed interventions into a comprehensive case conceptualization. You will also consider spiritual integration and counselor self-reflection as part of ethical, culturally responsive, and holistic crisis practice.

Assignment Requirements

·        Length: 8 -10 pages, double-spaced (not including title/reference pages).

·        Format: APA 7th edition.

·        Abstract must be included

·        References: At least 6 scholarly sources (minimum 2 course textbooks + 4 peer-reviewed journal articles).

Assignment Components

1. Neuroscience of Trauma (35 points)

In this section, demonstrate your knowledge of trauma’s impact on the brain and nervous system. Each section should be supported with relevant professional sources (e.g. course textbooks) and/or peer reviewed journal articles. Address the following:

·        Brain & Nervous System: Explain how trauma affects brain structures and the autonomic nervous system.

·        Neurobiological Effects: Describe both short-term and long-term consequences.

·        Risk Factors: Present bullet lists of risk factors at the individual, relational, and systemic levels.

·        Trauma Symptoms: Present bullet lists of common emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms of trauma.

2. Trauma Event Overview, Assessment & Clinical Priorities (40 points)

Provide a clear overview of Javier’s trauma experiences and clinical presentation.

·       Trauma Events

o   Identify Javier’s current crisis and past traumas.

o   Include details such as timing, context, and severity.

o   Explain briefly how these events are connected or cumulative.

·       Symptoms

Intake and Assessments

·       Briefly explain the purpose of the selected assessment and how it is applied in clinical practice.

3. Trauma-Informed Intervention (40 points)

When selecting a trauma-informed approach for Javier’s case, it is important to know that most evidence-based trauma interventions follow a similar structure, even if the terminology differs between models. At a minimum, all approaches include two key phases: Stabilization and Trauma Processing.

4. Spiritual Integration Considerations (30 points)

Evaluate Javier’s case through the lens of faith sensitivity and ethical practice.

·       Faith-Based Readiness: Explain how and when spiritual exploration could be introduced ethically, ensuring it is supportive, safe, and non-shaming.

·       Risk Factors: Identify possible internal conflicts, unresolved struggles, or misalignment between verbal agreement and internal readiness.

·       Ethical Integration: Reflect on your counselor biases and explain how you will prioritize autonomy, safety, and emotional regulation.

·       Safety Practices: Explain how you will:

o   Recognize when spiritual integration is safe and supportive.

o   Respond non-shamingly to anger, doubt, or frustration.

o   Adjust your integration strategies as needed to maintain client safety and dignity.

5. Self-Reflection (10 points)

Conclude with a ½–1 page reflection on your role as a counselor-in-training.
