Reading Guide: Comparative Analysis of Dei Verbum Chapters Assignment

Part1

Question 1 

Initial posts: Identify and explain a significant element in Dei Verbum corresponding to one of its 6 chapters. Connect this idea to another element in the text from another chapter. Choose two elements not chosen by another peer. 

·        Response posts: Build on the work of the initial post by connecting one of the elements presented in the initial post with a different element from either Verbum Domini or the Reading Guide material for the module. Be sure to give some explanation and context for the element of your choosing.  

Question 2 

Initial posts: Describe the presentation of one of the of the following topics found in our selections of Verbum Domini: sacred tradition, the life of the Church in authentic interpretation of scriptures, faith and reason, or the relationship between the Old and New Testaments. Explain how this information you have presented relates to another section of the selections.  

·        Response posts: Build on the work of the initial post by clarifying how the topic of the initial post can be enhanced by an element from either Dei Verbum or the Reading Guide. Be sure to give some explanation and context for the element of your choosing. 

Question 3 

Initial posts: Choose a topic from the selections of the Reading Guide to explain. Topics can include a section of the methods of interpretation, Scripture as/and tradition, or archeology. Explain how the section you selected fits within the larger section of the Reading Guide. 

Part 2

This discussion board will allow us to begin combining the perspectives we have been gaining from church documents, such as Dei Verbum and Verbum Domini, and the scholarly material in the Reading Guides with the text of the Bible itself.  

Materials for this discussion board include an introduction to the Pentateuch as well as the Reading Guide's introduction to major themes present in Genesis 1-11. Genesis 1-11 contains creation, the fall of humanity, the increase of violence, the flood, the story of Noah's family, and the story of the Tower of Babel. These narratives, when viewed together, give us elements necessary to understanding the rest of the Bible. 

Question 1

Initial posts: Select an element from the Reading Guide module assignment which you think will be important to your reading of the biblical text either this module or in the modules to come. Explain in light of the information provided in the readings of either this module or the prior module.

·        Response posts: Build on the work of the initial post by enhancing the justification of importance found in the initial post with different information found in the Reading Guide information from this module or the reading materials of the prior module. 

Question 2

Initial posts: Identify a narrative section in Genesis 1-11 which effectively portrays a central feature of the Bible's understanding of either human nature or human activity. Explain how this idea fits with another element of the non-scriptural reading materials for the course.

·        Response posts: Build on the work of the initial post by comparing or contrasting the selected narrative with another narrative from Genesis 1-11. Support your ideas with at least one reference to non-scriptural material from the course.

Question 3

Initial posts: Identify a section of Genesis 1-11 which portrays God's words or actions in response to human activity. Explain how the chosen selection seems to fit with any element presented in the other reading materials for the module.

·        Response posts: Build on the work of the initial post by comparing or contrasting the initial post's selection with a different element from Genesis 1-11. Explain carefully how and why you see either harmony or distinction between your example and that chosen by the initial poster.
