By completing this assignment, students will:

  1. Understand and apply OHS principles in real-world settings.
  2. Evaluate and identify ergonomic risks in an instructor’s office and classroom/lecture hall.
  3. Develop actionable recommendations to improve ergonomics based on their assessments.

Summary Deliverables:

Each team needs to make sure that they submit the following items. Only ONE (1) student per teams needs to submit.

Part 1: Safety Awareness

  1. Floor plan
  2. Data sheet and recommendations (2 pages)

Part 2: Ergonomics

  1. Ergonomic assessment: Instructor’s office AND classroom/lecture hall
  2. Photos
  3. Recommendations Report (4-6 pages)

Part 1: Safety Awareness

Choose a UDST building you have a class in. Create a hand-written OR computer-generated floor plan (diagram) which outlines all safety equipment with unique identifiers, emergency exits etc. of the building (both floors). Make sure to label and explain where each piece of safety equipment is located. DO NOT copy from the architectural drawings! This is YOUR work!

Provide an analysis of the diagram.

Answer the following questions:

  1. Evaluate Sufficiency:
  2. Identify Improvements:
  3. Scenario Planning:
  • Calculate equipment/person ratios (e.g., one fire extinguisher per 50 occupants).
  • Use real data where possible, such as daily foot traffic or room capacities. Compare to industry standards.
  • Suggest relocating or adding equipment based on accessibility or hazard proximity (e.g., closer to high-risk areas like kitchens or labs).
  • Consider ergonomic placement (e.g., fire extinguishers at a reachable height).
  • Analyze the time it would take to access safety equipment during different emergencies.
  • Consider limitations for individuals with disabilities.

Complete the data sheet (next page) in a maximum of 2 pages.

Safety Awareness Data Sheet:

A. Findings

  • Data Collected:
    • Total fire extinguishers: [Number]
    • Total first aid kits: [Number]
    • Daily building foot traffic: [Number of occupants]
  • Calculations:
    • Fire extinguishers/person ratio: [e.g., 1 extinguisher per 40 occupants].
    • First aid kits/person ratio: [e.g., 1 kit per 100 occupants].
  • Comparison:
    • Recommended standard: [Which standard did you use?
e.g., 1 fire extinguisher per 75 occupants, 1 first aid kit per 50 occupants].
    • Findings: [e.g., Ratios exceed fire extinguisher standards but fall short for first aid kits.]
