Information
Contemporary families are diverse. Family assessments are used by nurses with the aim to support early intervention in the care of children. Health professionals must ensure that all care provision is planned around the whole family and not just the child/person.
Family assessment is required to understand the way in which family’s function. To do this it is important that registered nurses understand the way in which the family functions and uses strengths and coping strategies to handle stress or changes in situations. Nurses also need to clarify any problems or issues and to understand what families experience, the roles, and functions within the family, and how the families engage with each other and the community around them. In planning care, it is important to acknowledge applicable primary health and
health promotion principles as well as identify any inequalities and social justice principles that may impact care delivery and/or health outcomes.

Format
Case Study Template: A 1500-word short answer response which will incorporate reflection and the use of relevant literature and academic sources.
Choose one of the case studies provided and identify which case study and health issue you have chosen.
Identify the case study chosen
Identify the health issue evident in the case study selected. Discuss and appraise this in the Australian context.
You will choose one (1) health promotion principle that connects to the health issue for your chosen case study. Select one (1) from the following health promotion

Recognise how the health issue identified may impact an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander family. You will identify inequalities and chose one (1) social justice principles that can be applied. (Chose one from the following: access, equity, participation, human rights).

You will identify and discuss one issue/problem and one strength/positive coping strategy evident in the case study.
You will identify and reflect on one key learning about family assessments that will inform your future practice as a registered nurse.
