Aims

The aim of this module is to develop students’ understanding of the management of organisations in the international context. It will introduce management concepts, such as the business functions, organisational structure and work design approaches. In doing so, it will offer various managerial tools to assess the organisational environment and enhance performance. The module stresses the importance of effective organisational communication and teamwork. The course highlights the vital role of corporate social responsibility and ethics in conducting business. Students will develop the ability to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of various management theories and their application in the management of international organisations.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Skills

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

1. Identify and describe key terms in organisational environment, structure, work design and management of international organisations;
2. Learn key elements of effective teamwork and leadership theories and the development of entrepreneurial and social entrepreneurial activities;
3. Discuss the importance and application of business ethics, social responsibility and sustainability
4. Propose appropriate organisational structures and work designs to respond to dynamic business environments.
5. Communicate in diverse work environments considering the impact of diversity on business practices and employee management.
6. Integrate corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ethical considerations into global business activities.

Summative Assessment

It is the summative assessment that determines the grade that you are awarded for the module.

We now look at each component of assessment for this module in detail. Each of the following tables provides an overview of the requirements for each component. The support provided for each component along with the feedback arrangements, is also detailed below.

Please choose one of the following 2 topics:

Question 1: Social Enterprise (2500 words)

A. Explain, using ONLY academic sources, the difference between Entrepreneurship and Social Entrepreneurship (approx. 500 words).

B. Choose an appropriate Social Enterprise (located anywhere in the world). Identity. analyse and assess your chosen company’s business practices, demonstrating how the company meets each of the four main characteristics of a Social Enterprise (social purpose, trading activity, full cost recovery, profits reinvested), and provide examples from the organisation to support your argument (approx. 1500 words).

C. Propose a creative new idea to further the social aims of your chosen company (approx. 500 words).

OR

Question 2: Corporate Social Responsibility (2500 words)

A. Explain, using ONLY academic sources, the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility and briefly discuss current global trends in CSR practices (approx. 500 words).

B. Choose an appropriate company with a well-developed CSR focus (located anywhere in the world). Identify, analyse and assess your chosen company’s CSR practices, using Carroll’s CSR Pyramid as a framework to do so (approx. 1500 words).

C. Propose a creative idea for a new CSR initiative which builds on your chosen company’s mission and values (approx. 500 words).
