MEDICATION TOPIC: Haldol The content of the paper will be as follows (see the section on “Headings” for additional clarification on how to format your headings for this paper) the required heading are in bold: Introduction of Medication What was public (and medical community) response to the drug General Purpose of Drug (Including off label uses) for both mental health and other if applicable, include legal and illicit use of drug Prescribing Trends (How is the drug being prescribed now as compared to 10-20 years ago (Is it being prescribed for children more often or at alarming rates,….). You must address micro, mezzo and macro levels. This section needs to include special issues with the drug AND our role as social workers. Side Effects and Interactions of Medications and Implications for Social Work All drugs have side effects. In this section, tell me what the side effects are AND what does that mean for social workers. What can we do? Conclusion References dbsk_bar.jpg Paper Format: All papers must be in MICROSOFT WORD. Papers submitted in any other format will not be graded. Students should format their title page, research paper content, and reference page(s) according to the APA Publication Manual, Seventh Edition. You MUST have a title page. Papers without a title page will not be graded. Students should use the student paper format, including a cover page. For more information: refer to Chapter 2 of APA Publication Manual, Seventh Edition, the APA Style Paper Format resource, and the APA Student Title Page Guide. Level 2 headings are required. See pages 47 – 49 of the 7th edition APA manual. All information MUST be cited. See Chapter 8 of the 7th edition APA manual. The purpose of these papers is to ensure that students can critically analyze what they are reading. Therefore- NO MORE than two sentences of direct quotes is permitted. Write the entire paper in paragraph format. Do not use bullets. Entire paper should be double-spaced, including title page, reference page, etc. Ensure your content is not triple or quadruple spaced. Student papers do not include a running head. For more information: refer to page 30 of the APA Publication Manual, Seventh Edition, and this APA Style Header resource. This paper should NOT include an abstract, table of contents, or appendix. dbsk_bar.jpg Grammar and Syntax: The symbol for percent should only be used when preceded by a number or in table. Otherwise, spell out the word percent. Numbers one through nine should be written out – not typed as 1, 2, 3, etc. Do not use “I”; “this researcher”; “we”; “you” statements. Sentences should begin with words. Sentences should not begin with numbers, abbreviations or acronyms. For example: “Obsessive Compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder in which…” NOT: “OCD is an anxiety disorder…” Avoid beginning sentences with “so”, “also”, “also too”, “as well”. Please learn proper use of they’re, their, and there. Use the words “additionally, nevertheless, in addition” sparingly. Needless to say is typically needless to say. (In other words, try to avoid using it.) When referring to people it should be “who” – not “that” (For example, “People WHO like ice cream.”). Fewer is used when speaking or writing about countable things (for example: “Three people or fewer”). Do not use contractions. Whenever feasible, use preferred pronouns. If gender is unknown, use ‘they’. Do not capitalize the words ‘social work’ or ‘social worker’, etc (for example, you would not capitalize the word ‘plumber’.). Papers read better if sentences begin with the subject rather than the citation. Do this: “Medications in Social Work is the best elective offered at UCF (Lawrence, 2010).” Instead of this: “According to Lawrence (2010), Medications in Social Work is the best elective offered at UCF.” dbsk_bar.jpg Margins and Spacing: The paper should be double spaced and include 1″ margins throughout. There should be no extra double spaces between paragraphs. Here is a video illustrating how to remove extra spaces between paragraphs. dbsk_bar.jpg Font Type and Size: Use 12-point Times New Roman font. Ensure the font type and font size of your page numbers are consistent with the rest of your paper. dbsk_bar.jpg Copying and Pasting and Content from Past Papers: This is a research paper therefore all information must be cited. Plagiarism will NOT be tolerated. Copying and pasting and not rewriting in your own words is plagiarism (even if it is cited). Papers found to be “copied and pasted” will be receive a zero, and a report will be made with the Office of Student Conduct. Using papers from other classes without changing the majority of the content is not permitted. What this means is the following: you can keep the general topic (i.e. depression) but must focus primarily on the medication. You may use 10 sentences from former papers. dbsk_bar.jpg In-Text Citations and References: In-text citations and sources used (reference page) should be formatted according to APA style (double spaced). You must use TEN peer reviewed sources for this paper. At least six (6) must be EVIDENCED BASED (this means they are based on research). Websites may not be cited except National Institutes of Health (NIH, NIMH), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), or the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). No more than ten (10) sentences may be derived from these websites. They may be cited in addition to the 10 peer reviewed sources. You may NOT use personal communications of any kind (including MDs and pharmacists), client records, personal information or newspapers or magazines as sources. Wikipedia is NOT an appropriate source for this paper. Any papers found to use Wikipedia will not receive credit for those sections. The course textbook (or past editions of this text) may not be cited or used as a reference. The course-specific information (module content, slides, etc.) is from other sources so do not cite instructors, slides, etc. The punctuation for the sentence goes AFTER the parenthesis. In other words, periods go AFTER the ( ). You must cite, often. If it is not an original thought, you must cite a source. Because this is a research paper, everything should be cited. Your opinion should not be the focus of the research paper. Each paragraph should contain multiple citations from AT LEAST 2 DIFFERENT sources. Citations should be as follows (Smith, 2004) or (Doe et al., 2000) NOT (Doe, Jones, & Smith) or (2000). Authors and years should always go together. Publication years NEVER stand alone. Sources with two or fewer authors: include all last names in all citations (i.e., every time it is cited). Sources with three or more authors: use the first authors name followed by “et al.” (Doe et al., 2005). For more information about in-text citations, refer to Chapter 8 of the 7th edition APA Manual or this APA Style resource regarding ‘Author-Date Citation System’. If more than one source states the same thing (i.e., you are citing multiple works in one in-text citation), then sources should be listed in alphabetical order and separated by a semi colon such as this: (Tom et al., 2005; Zittel & Wodarski, 2000). To review formatting and structure of various reference examples, refer to Chapters 9 and 10 of the 7th edition APA Manual or this APA Style resource regarding ‘Reference Examples’. dbsk_bar.jpg Paper Length: The paper must be a minimum of 7 pages in length (not including title page and references). The page limit of this paper is 16. Anything above 16 pages will not be read or graded. dbsk_bar.jpg Headings: You must use the headings provided below. Papers without headings will be returned without a grade. Name of Drug: Introduction of Medication: General Purpose of Drug: Prescribing Trends: Implications for Special Populations: Side Effects and Interactions of Medications and Implications for Social Work: Conclusion: References:
