Part- 1

The ILM assignment for Leadership Skills Development is broken down into four work-based questions. By following this question guide and suggestions closely you should be able to achieve a ‘good pass’.

1.1 Describe the factors that will influence the choice of leadership styles or behaviours in workplace situations 

  • Explain the leadership styles model discussed on pages 18 to 21 of your workbook to provide context for different types of leadership style and behaviour

  • Describe in detail two or more factors such as the demands of the task, experience of the individual, whether you are leading an individual or team, etc. that would influence your choice of style

  • Provide real examples of workplace situations that would indicate these factors being present and why each factor demanded a different style

1.2 Explain why these leadership styles or behaviours are likely to have a positive or negative effect on individual and group behaviour

  • Referring to the four leadership styles identified in the model on pages 18 to 21, explain how each is likely to have a positive or negative effect on the individual Then repeat the above to discuss the positive or negative effect on the group/ team. Be sure to differentiate between the effects on the individual and the team

  • Provide real workplace examples to support your conclusions, describing the factors that influenced your style or behaviour and their impact on individual and group behaviour

 

Part- 2

2.1 Assess own leadership behaviours and potential in the context of a particular leadership model and own organisation’s working practices and culture, using feedback from others

  • Gather feedback on your leadership style and behaviour from others (direct reports, manager, colleagues) in the context of the model described on pages 18 to 21. This feedback ideally should be in the form of a brief questionnaire

  • Use this feedback to assess and describe your leadership style and potential. This should include a conclusion of the results

  • Refer to your leadership style questionnaire and its results to explain how you see your own leadership style (upload a copy of the analysis to support your conclusions)

  • Include some judgments on which style(s) you feel you display well, and which need improvement

  • Provide a detailed explanation of how your style (through your self-analysis and also the feedback of others) fits in with or is influenced by the organisation’s Vision, Mission and Values, culture and working practices

2.2 Describe appropriate actions to enhance own leadership behaviour in the context of the particular leadership model

  • Referring to the assessment and conclusions detailed in 2.1 above, provide a thorough range of actions that will help to develop your leadership behaviours. This should link explicitly to the leadership styles model

  • Your actions should be based on the ‘SMART’ model of objective setting
