Every year institutions engage in a faculty renewal and tenure process. The process, for the most part, includes a structured process and related procedures in conducting the reviews. For this discussion, you will assume the role of the faculty leader who has been asked to review select recommendations rendered by the tenure/renewal committee.
One of the recommendations sent for your review was to not renew a contract of a fellow colleague. You are stunned and a bit lost as to why and how the committee recommended the nonrenewal, since the faculty member seemed to be established and well liked within the institution. You must now convene a meeting of your fellow faculty members to review the recommendations and either agree or disagree with the outcome. Keep in mind, you are working inside an organization that considers colleagues to be equal partners. As you begin to prepare your opening remarks for your upcoming meeting, please consider the following:
As a collegial organization, what main elements would you expect to be included in the college’s contract renewal process?
What are some of your challenges of balancing the recommendation versus upholding the culture of the college?
How would you communicate to the college at large about the nonrenewal decision?
Now, take the role of faculty member whose contract will not be renewed:
What steps should you take in addressing this employment situation?
How might such decisions challenge the collegial culture of the institution?
