    A SNAPSHOT OF REALITY

The day-to-day events/routine of the work environment bring you in contact with a wide variety of individuals, especially in a school setting. One of the more ubiquitous things you experience is school picture day. That day entails lots of paper work for teachers and office staff, constant calls over the intercom for the next class to have their pictures made, and long waits in line as the photographer and/or his/her assistant makes the pictures. Even with the advent of the digital camera; the waits are long. Getting Jasmine or Derick to sit still can take a while.

Those same long lines present a great opportunity. You seize the opportunity to network with faculty and with the photographer. Networking is a vital practice as you never know when or what service you will need.

On this day you have spent much of your day as assistant principal coordinating the school day pictures. It has been so busy and hectic that you have not had a chance to talk to the photographer who is new this year. You met him when he came seeking the business and were hoping to get to chat with him today.

At the end of the day (after the school picture taking has been completed), you see him leaving the building and walk over to speak. “Good to see you, again, Mr. Williams. How did it go for you today?”

Mr. Williams replies, “For our first time here I thought it went well. The teachers were very helpful and the children were most cooperative.” In response to the complimentary remarks you respond, “I am glad to hear that. We are glad to have you working with us.”

Mr. Williams remarks, “I’m very glad to have the business and it did not cost me as much as I expected; just one case of bourbon and two season tickets for the college football season. I had heard that your principal would drive a lot harder bargain.”

You are so taken aback by Mr.Williams comments that he is out the door before you can reply.

    Case Brief 2

    Instructions

Case law often takes time. The actions of those in the field occur in seconds and those on the bench may take days, weeks, months, even years, analyzing and forming an opinion of that action. You should expect to spend a great deal of time reviewing, often multiple times, a court decision. As judges often have a great deal of time when writing decisions, as opposed to those in the field who must often must rely instinctively and on past training to take immediate action, judicial opinions are often long and drawn out. While the length and volume may pose a hurdle, generally the writing style poses a greater hurdle. This style is often very subtle and complicated as key words, phrases, or points are frequently glanced over on a first reading. It is up to you identify the core of the controversy and accurately identify the court’s ruling. This involves summarizing and condensing in brief and concise form the nature of the issue at hand, the judicial opinion, and the ruling (Krislov, 1972).

Weeks 3, 5 and 8, you will be required to submit a case brief of the assigned case. Each brief represents your analysis of the assigned case. Each brief is worth 16% of your overall grade in the course. Grades for these papers will reflect a combination of form, logic, flow, grammar, spelling, APA format, and demonstrated understanding of principles. These case briefs of 4-6 [double spaced] pages each, when completed, should help your develop your critical thinking/analysis skills. These must be submitted during the week assigned. Late papers will result in the automatic loss of a letter grade.

A very good reference, entitled How to Brief a Case, addressing the pertinent content of a brief but not the form or sequence to be used in this class can be found on the John Jay College website.

Utilize the Brief Template format provided. All attachments must be submitted in Word format. No other formats are accepted as all faculty may not be able open the attachment and thus not be able to grade it. If you see a numerical score of “1” for the brief, this indicates the faculty member was unable to open your attachment and you must resubmit your work in Word format for a grade. Your work is considered late and late penalties apply until your work is submitted in the proper format to faculty.

Krislov, S. (1972) Judicial process and constitutional law. Little Brown & Co.

For this assignment you must submit your brief as a Word document.

Papers will be graded based on the Criminal Justice Paper Rubric found in your course site.

Journalism and Publishing in the Digital Age Assignment: Final Project and Presentation Due: Wednesday, Dec. 11

Over the course of this semester, we have examined and debated the future of journalism and publishing in the digital age — both through the lens of the changing media industry and through your personal news consumption habits. This final project will allow you to bring these themes together to reflect on the material we have learned and to share your personal views on the future of news.

The final project will consider of three parts as follows:

Reflection on Personal Media Consumption (2 pages)

At the start of the semester, you were asked to consume at least 20 minutes of news per day. And for your media diary entries, you have been engaging with the news through different platforms and analyzing how information is presented. Now, complete a two-page reflection that summarizes your personal media use and lessons you have learned as a news consumer.

    In this paper, you should:

    –        Discuss how your media consumption has changed, if at all, compared to the start of the semester.

    –        Reflect on the positive and negative experiences you have had as a news consumer, and whether your perspective on journalism has changed.

    –        Explain whether your own news consumption habits reflect some of the trends we have studied in class about how the population at large now consumes news.

    –        Finally, discuss whether you believe your media consumption habits will change going forward in both your personal life and professional career.

Reflections on the Digital Landscape (3 pages)

Using your knowledge of the digital media landscape from your research and work in this course, outline your vision for the best way forward to inform news consumers in the digital age. Write a three-page exploration that can include commentary from media critics, examples from the digital media sites the class has shared, your readings, and the skills you’ve gained as a skeptical news consumer.

Key questions to consider: What approach to covering the news represents the best chance for informing the public? How can journalism restore public trust in its coverage? What are your thoughts on the most promising business models for journalism’s future?

If you are passionate about quality journalism in the digital age, here is your chance to show it. If you are skeptical and pessimistic, make the argument for your viewpoint.

    Presentation (5-7 minutes)

The purpose of this presentation is to make your argument to the class about the best way forward to inform news consumers in the digital age. You should create 5 slides based on your reflection paper that outline your arguments. You should also incorporate visuals that support your argument, including charts, graphs, news clips, or digital media examples. You should use Microsoft PowerPoint or any other presentation software for your presentation. You will have about 5-7 minutes for your presentation.

Your presentation will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

    1.  Preparedness (20%): You must be prepared for your presentation. Be on time and post your presentation on Canvas before the class (the day of your presentation). You will be given 5-7 minutes to finish your presentation. If you go over time, you will be penalized. You must not read the slides or flashcards. Flashcards and slides must only be used as a guide.

    2.  Presentation (20%): You should demonstrate your knowledge of the theories and the topics that we have learned this semester. Your presentation should not be more than 5 slides long. It should have title and introduction, findings and conclusion slides. There should be no grammar and spelling mistakes.

    3.  Content (60%): Your presentation should demonstrate a clear point of view that is supported by research and information learned in this class and derived from outside readings, videos and podcasts. It’s important to remember you are being asked to offer an informed opinion (i.e. what you think). You are not simply restating information.
