Carter and McGoldrick Identified Six Stages of family development:

    3. Family with young children
    4. Family with adolescents

    6. Family in later life

Cater and McGoldrick six stages of family development emphasizes the guideline of how family develops in society. This model focuses on the evolution of unattached adults to family in later life through several generations of procreation. The model also gives examples of “predictable events such as marriage, birth, and retirement and unpredictive events such as death, complications with birth resulting in a developmentally delayed child, divorce, etc.” (Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, Strom-Gottfried, 2017, p.264).

The seven instruments may be used as sources for understanding the family situation Clinical assessment Package for assessing Risks and Strengths, Culturagram, Ecomap, Family Assessment Wheel, Integrative Model by Level of Need, Multisystems Approach, Social Support Network Map (Hepworth et al., 2017).

    Hello Daydreona,

Well done on this week’s discussion post. I agree with your post as it pertain to Carter and McGoldrick’s six stages of family development. I would like to add that it is imperative that we understand everyone’s family going through the different stages of development at different times. Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, and Strom-Gottfried (2017) states, “families can change, readjust, and cope with stressful transitions that occur within the life cycle” (Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, and Strom-Gottfried, 2017, p. 265).

The seven instruments used for understanding a family’s situation are all useful in their own way. I found each of these tools to be useful as someone who worked at the Department of Social Services as a Foster Care Case Manager. “It can be difficult to find the right tool for a family or its problem, multiple screening inventory tools may be more appropriate for assessing family strengths and stressors” (Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, and Strom-Gottfried, 2017, p 277). Using these tools can help you as you are working to identify the strengths and challenges within the families you are working with and develop the best intervention methods possible.

Hello Daydreona. Good post. I just wanted to add more information pertaining to the seven instruments. The clinical assessment package for assessing risks and strengths (CASPARS) developed by (Gilgun 1994,2001) is for families receiving mental health and child welfare services, responds to related concerns. The culturalgram (Congress,1994) is a useful tool for assessing family dimensions in the context of culture, because “the systems view limits important cultural considerations” (Green,1999, P.8). The ecomap enables you to focus on the social context of families and interactions between the family and the larger society (Hartman & Laird, 1983). The family assessment wheels allow you to examine the sociopolitical and cultural context of the family experience (Mailick & Vigilante,1997). The integrative model by level of need developed by Kilpatrick and Cleveland (1993), recognizes five level of family need and functioning. The Multisystems approach developed by Boyd-Franklin and Bry (2000) is derived from structural behavioral family therapy but is also applicable to social work practice with families. The social support network map examines the strength and quality of the family’s interconnected relationships and social supports (Tracy & Whittaker, 1990).

Please reply to peer must cite book

According to Hepworth (2016), the six stages of family development identified by Carter and McGoldrick (1988, 2005) are as follows:

1.) The unattached young adult; which is considered a single individual who is in the process of breaking away and growing into his or her own person.

2.) New couple; which is the joining of two unattached young adults ready to begin a new family.

3.) Family with young children; which involves a new phase of life when the couple procreates and starts their own family dynamic, separate from the one they grew up in.

4.) Family with adolescents; which is the next phase where the children of the original two unattached adults begin to develop their own interests, while still being under their parents’ care.

5.) Family that is launching children; which is when the process begins to potentially start over again as the family potentially separates. The parents could become “empty-nesters” and the children could start their own journeys in finding their senses of self.

6.) Family later in life: when all members of the family have a sense of belonging.

What I found important when reading the chapter this week was that these six stages do not have to happen in order (Hepworth, 2016). “Families can change, readjust, and cope with stressful transitions that occur within the life cycle,” (McKentry and Price, 2000). Families with different cultural backgrounds also could have a different family development. (Hepworth, 2016). “In this world, life events are not preordained. Instead, they are more likely to be atomistic, mixed-and-matched responses to self-definition and opportunity (Meyer, 1990, p. 12).”

According to Hepworth (2016), the seven instruments which can be used as sources for understanding the family situation are as follows:

1.) The Clinical Assessment Package for Assessing Risks and Strengths (Gilgun, 1994, 2001); CASPARS was created to put risks and protective factors on a scale. It responds to family related concerns, which can range from family and peer relationships, to sexuality (Hepworth, 2016, p. 276).

2.) The Culturalgram (Congress, 1994); this is helpful for families and the cultures they follow as a unit.

3.) The ecomap; focuses on the social dynamic of families in the context of a larger society (Hartman and Laird, 1983).

4.) The Family Assessment Wheel; an examination of the family experience in a sociopolitical way (Mailick and Vigilante, 1997).

5.) The Integrative Model by Level of Need; there are five levels of family need and functioning, which range from basic survival, such as food and shelter, to the family’s relationship and communication styles (Kilpatrick and Holland, 2006).

6.) The Multisystems Approach; assessment and intervention are combined to form a structured behavioral therapeutic approach for the family (Boyd-Franklin and Bry, 2000).

7.) The Social Support Network Map; an examination of the family’s connections within the family unit and interconnected relationships (Tracy and Whittaker, 1990).

    Case study:

You are working in a family practice when Joe, a recently divorced 56-year-old Caucasian man, presents to you with complaints of insomnia and fatigue. He denies any recent injury or specific pain and was last seen in your office 11 months ago where he disclosed that he was going through a divorce due to his sexual orientation. Joe has taken an antihypertensive medication to control his blood pressure for three years and does not report any adverse side effects. Joe has worked in law enforcement for 14 years. He recently discharged his firearm for the first time. Even though no one was injured, Joe has been attending mandated appointments with the department psychologist. Joe reports that he does not have a regular exercise regimen. To relax, he typically goes fishing or has a few beers after his shift. Other than the mandated appointments with the department psychologist, Joe has not sought any mental health treatment. During the appointment, Joe states that it’s hard for him to talk about how he is feeling and begins to cry.

Hello, I have provided the instructions below. Please let me know if you have any questions. NO RESEARCH REQUIRED.
This semester, we have examined computer, we have examined ethics – and along the way, we have examined many other topics – but we have not directly paid attention to the question of society. After all, it would seem that we can only understand the roles of computers and ethics in society if we first understand (or at least have some hypotheses about) society. To think philosophically (which I recommend!), we need to develop the mental habit of considering all of our ideas as provisional – that is, all of my ideas, even my most cherished (and/or clung to) beliefs are not facts, but proposals. Therefore, without getting too hung up about it, I can examine them – ruthlessly – without debilitating myself psychologically. Again, this is a mental discipline, and takes time and attention to develop. Everyone feels free to criticize the ideas and beliefs they don’t share – philosophy is the practice of criticizing all ideas equally (at least, as equally as possible, given the nature of our unconscious conditioning, privilege, biases, etc. – thus, the philosophical practice of self-examination, which continues throughout one’s life).
What is society? Or, who are they? What constitutes a society, what is its “nature,” as philosophers are wont to say? Is society the same thing as community, as populace, as people, as state, as nation, as territory (etc.)?
Depending on our answers to these questions, we can go on to ask: what is/are the role(s) of computers in society (as we have defined it)? What is the role of ethics in this relationship between computers and society? What ethical theories work best to describe and/or regulate this situation, which, by all accounts, is novel in human history? How novel is it really?
