Be sure to identify examples of data elements you will recommend for your portal and where they will originate, including which information can be pulled from the EHR and which has to be entered manually. What are the pros and cons of each method (automatic transfer and manual data entry)? Consider the features that you want to make available to patients, such as the following:
• Will patients be able to upload results from tests performed at another institution?
• Will patients be able to download results from tests performed at your institution so that they can send them to another institution?
• Will patients be able to interact with the portal? For example, can they send a message to their physician?
• Will patients be able to make an appointment?
• Will patients be able to answer a questionnaire about nutrition, smoking, and so on?
• Will patients be able to enter their medication and allergy list?
Also, propose procedures for the storage of data on the portal. Remember that the data from the EHR resides in the EHR and is pulled on demand to the portal; but if the patient can ask questions, enter data, and make appointments, how will this information be stored?
