Wri!en Assignment: Biology and Technology in the Real World
This assignment addresses course outcomes 1-4:
recognize and explain how the scien”fic method is used to solve problems
make observa”ons and discriminate between scien”fic and pseudoscien”fic explana”ons
weigh evidence and make decisions based on strengths and limita”ons of scien”fic knowledge and the scien”fic method
use knowledge of biological principles, the scien”fic method, and appropriate technologies to ask relevant ques”ons, develop hypotheses, design and conduct experiments, interpret results, and draw conclusions
1. Select one of the topics listed below (a-e).
2. Find at least three reliable informa”on sources related to your chosen topic. You are
encouraged to use the UMUC library in your search: h!p://libguides.umuc.edu/science.
3. Write a paper with “tle page, introduc”on, several paragraphs addressing the ques”ons, conclusion and references. You must write in your own words and paraphrase informa”on from the selected informa”on sources, addressing each of the ques”ons for your chosen topic. 4. Submit your assignment to the Assignment folder by the due date listed in the course schedule.

b) Gene”cally modified organisms (GMOs). A friend tells you that she avoids foods containing GMOs because they are unhealthy. You decide to use the knowledge gained from your biology class and some addi”onal research to form your own opinion on GMOs. Answer the following ques”ons backed up by reliable informa”on sources. What is the purpose of gene”cally engineering of crop plants? Include at least two specific examples of commonly grown GMO crops. How are GMOs created? Use the provided course materials and make a connec”on to the central dogma of molecular biology in your explana”on. Which foods in your supermarket contain GMOs? Are foods that contain GMOs safe for human consump”on? What types of regula”ons exist for these foods? Clearly explain your reasoning for each answer in your paper and conclude whether or not you agree with your friend.
