This final take-home exam essay consists of three parts and should total approximately six double-spaced pages (and no more than seven double-spaced pages) in size 12 Times New Roman font, with standard margins and a bibliography on a separate page. You may determine how many pages you wish to devote to each part. Do not put your name anywhere on the exam (it will be graded anonymously), and note that you are responsible for submitting a working (i.e. openable) .doc or .docx with your essay by 2:30pm on May 10. Any essays received after that time will be penalized by a full letter grade, and an additional letter grade per 24 hour period. Late essays will not be accepted after 2:30pm on May 12.
Part One: What makes cultural anthropology unique as an academic discipline? Explain how cultural anthropology differs both methodologically and theoretically from another humanistic (e.g. history, philosophy, religious studies, etc.) or social scientific (e.g. psychology, sociology, economics, political science, etc.) discipline with which you are already familiar. Explain how cultural anthropology and your chosen discipline would approach the study of religion in different ways. This response should cite at least six texts from our syllabus.
Part Two: What makes Nightmarch anthropological? Explain what makes Nightmarch a work of cultural anthropology and not journalism. Cite Nightmarch (extensively) and at least four other texts from our syllabus.
Part Three: Who should cultural anthropologists collaborate with? In this final part, critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the methodological and theoretical tools of cultural anthropology you described in Part One. Provide two examples of research questions that you believe that cultural anthropology is well-equipped to answer, and explain why. Provide two examples of research questions that you believe cultural anthropology is not well-equipped to answer, and explain why. For the questions that you believe cultural anthropology is not suited to answer, identify a complementary approach (either humanistic or social scientific) and explain in detail how cultural anthropologists and users of this other approach could collaborate productively to address these questions. Cite at least four texts from our syllabus.
