In writing the essay make sure you have a clear introduction, main body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Make sure that you support all main points with specific examples. One of the constant struggles that women have faced throughout history has been acceptance and equality in the workforce. The twentieth century presented its own unique challenges in regards to female labor, as women endured economic depression, wartime compulsion, and conservative backlash in the 1950s and 1980s. Account for the changing nature of the female workforce from the 1930s to the 1980s? How did women respond to the challenges confronting them in this period?
Women had achieved the right to vote by 1920 with the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. However, political equality did not translate into social equality, as women were still seen as second-class citizens, which led to the push for an Equal Rights Amendment. In what ways did women challenge the notion of inequality throughout the twentieth century? What role did the evolving notion of feminism play in challenging these perceptions and how did it foster the passage of the ERA by 1972?
One of the biggest innovations of twentieth century popular culture was the advent of television. Historians have debated the extent to which television has worked to influence social perceptions of gender in America. How were women portrayed on television from the 1950s to the 1980s? In what way did these portrayals reflect the social reality of each period? To what extent did these depictions change or stay the same?
