Our term paper assignment will involve research using major internet collections of women’s history documents as well as the use of two journal articles. For honorific work, you can also use a monograph or chapters from a monograph… You can do the paper on either the Radical Feminist Movement or Liberal Feminism, both of which developed in the 1960s-1970s and laid the groundwork for much of what most people take for granted today in terms of gender equality. Or you could do a paper on women in the Civil Rights movement, women in the Black Panthers, women in AIM, or conservative women in the 1950s or 1970s. You could do a paper on women in the labor movement in the 1930s-1980s,…where there is history, there are women. PAPERS I WOULD NOT LIKE TO SEE: ROSIE THE RIVETER, FLAPPERS, WOMEN WHO PASSED AS MEN TO SERVE IN THE MILITARY, AND BIOGRAPHY. Learning Objectives: After completing the term paper, you will be able to: demonstrate in-depth historical knowledge about the topic you have chosen; use the internet and electronic databases to locate primary sources; * use traditional print secondary sources to locate primary sources; locate the main argument(s) of and critically analyze a secondary source (your selected journal articles and optional monograph); integrate other scholars’ ideas into your own paper without plagiarizing; analyze and interpret primary sources using the concepts and theories covered in class and assigned readings; effectively organize your ideas and research in an academic essay of 8-15 pp. with proper source citation; revise effectively based on peer and professor review of draft writing. DUE DATES: Your first draft should be a second draft really. It should be as polished and complete as possible. In this way, you will receive better, more constructive and useful feedback. Minimum length: eight pages. Maximum length: 15 pages (excluding bibliography and title page) Use 12 pt. font, double-spaced with page numbers and a title page. Standard citation format for history papers is Chicago (also called Turabian). If you’re not familiar with this citation format, please contact me and I will direct you to resources. Term paper counts for 40% of your grade for the course. The first draft will count for about 15% of the 40% and the revised draft will count for the rest. A significant portion of your grade will be based on the effective revision of your first draft, including a demonstration of revision as specifically responding to peer review comments as well as professor’s feedback on the first draft.
